this was horrible for the v1.8.9 Minecraft scene (obscure I know). Cheaters could pay $1 to make an account, cheat on it till they got banned, then refund the dollar and make a new account with the same $1.
Now anticheats are better than they were a few years ago but still, essentially free accounts to cheat on isn’t helping.Wait… cheating in Minecraft? Aren’t most servers private?
For the modern versions mostly. 1.8.9 has pvp and minigames where cheating is more similar to cheating in a FPS kinda game where it actually harms people. Also during the $1 sale Minecraft was in the middle of a population boom (iirc due to Dream getting popular) so the moderation was overwhelmed. Here’s an example of what cheating looks like
https://youtu.be/MD0khw_V0WAWow didn’t know it turned into more than a block builder. I’m going to have to revisit the game lol last time I played was like 8 years ago now.
Yeah, there’s a bunch of new stuff. I got it when it was in beta or something back in 2011 or so, and my kids wanted to try it, so I dug out my old credentials. It has come a long way from when I last played in the mid 2010s.
It’s still largely a block builder, but there’s a ton more complexity to it now, even on vanilla MC. My understanding is that most servers run a bunch of mods, and there are a ton of crazy mods out there these days, so it’s more a platform than anything at this point.
Nice, I might have to dig it back out, my account I know I had to transfer to like Microsoft or something a few years ago.
Cool, once it works properly on my Steam Deck, I’ll consider it. Until then, Valve and GOG get my money.
Do GOG work properly on Steam Deck now?
you have to do manual intervention or one of the launchers that supports gog and as far as I know that always worked, but there’s no built in and ready by default method. It’s literally one flatpak install away though.
I play GOG games through Heroic and adding them to Steam, and they seem to work fine.
Still desperately trying to get us to leave steam I see
My biggest problem with the Xbox app is it blocks you from modding the game by default. It’s up to the developer to enable it. And from my perspective I think many of these developers don’t even know it exists.
I had suggested the GamePass style subscription thing for Steam years ago. This is one thing someone else actually does that Steam does not. I’ll just use both. Because gaming is one of my only hobbies, I play a lot. The subscription model access to an entire catalogue is more economical than buying every single new game for full price. And if I do want to buy them, they’re still usually sold on Steam too.
But you don’t get every single new game with GamePass, either. You get a mediocre set of stuff published by Microsoft with some occasional AA games and a random selection of indies, some of which are actually good, but also aren’t that expensive to just buy and own instead.
Most AAA games with even a tangential relation with Microsoft get released on Game Pass on day 1
That means stuff they publish. Which, despite all their acquisitions, is consistently very mediocre. And because of the day one “free” status, almost always has bad extra monetization on top of it.
I really think you’re underestimating how much and what kind of content they offer, but you do you.
It’s an incredibly far cry from the “all” he mentioned, and it isn’t close to the best or most desirable.
I’m well aware of what it has available, and it’s genuinely not good enough to get me to install Windows if they provided it for free. But the entire reason Gamepass exists is because they know it makes them more long term than buying your games.

This is what I said. I never implied they had all games. Only that it’s cheaper in the long run to subscribe and get access to the new games on GamePass than paying full price for each one.

I have to say, PC version of Game Pass is far more cheaper than their console edition, so it’s can be worth it for sure. But I definitely agree you need to game a lot for it to do so,
I had PC game pass as part of my game pass ultimate to your subscription that I got with my Series X, and honestly despite their diverse catalog that they had, I found most of the games that they offered I either already had because they had gone on sales or already given for free through other services(epic or Humble choice usually), or just didn’t interest me.
I love how many Indie style games that they would but, it was very rarely that they actually offered a game that was interesting despite the fact that they cycle through their content constantly. And their AAA titles, at least at that time not sure if it still is the case was definitely lacking in the availability department. It was very clear that the primary focus point of Game Pass was Indie style titles over the primary Studios, but I never really wanted to play them due to the fact that since they’re cycled out so frequently I would start a game and then two or three weeks later I would get a message saying this game is leaving Game Pass.
Plus it also was hard for me to swallow spending $240 for a subscription to Ultimate yearly(or whatever the pc gamepass sub price is yearly) , and then having nothing to show for it when that subscription ran out because you lose access to all the games. I would much rather spend that money on actual games and then not lose access to it when it’s done.
Honestly, I found Humble Choice being a good alternative to paying that sub, roughly 120-140 a year, and you get 8 titles a month that’s yours to keep
The company also has a vested interest in keeping PC players on their OS, while simultaneously treating the platform like a second class citizen for years. Anybody remember the abortion that was Games for Windows Live? And it isn’t like Windows Mixed Reality or ‘this is now a tablet OS’ are doing them any favors either.
God am I happy I didn’t buy any software on the Microsoft store.
I fell in for mixed reality, and I should have known better. They just killed the entire ecosystem. Standard Microsoft behavior
If you start a trial on PC, you might download 2 games by the time it ends.
Only if your internet is shit.
It’s not my Internet that makes steam 10x faster.
I thought that deal was long gone already, at least for previous subscribers. I used to cancel and the resubscribe for $1 over and over.
Same, haven’t seen it for over a year. Shame its only 2 weeks now but that’s enough time to play Nine Sols.
Interesting, right before Indiana Jones release.
Do they think it won’t bump GamePass numbers so this deal will make it feel like that post launch?
Or do they think players are so hyped about the game and this is a way to get them addicted to the idea of subscription service instead of letting them buy full price because subscriptions pay off better in the long run?
