  • Oh boy, here we go again…

Will the Government succeed in their age ban, or will they learn (once again) that they’re just not that effective.

You tell kids, especially teens, that they can’t use social media, they’re gonna want to use it more - and they will bypass any restrictions you put in their way.

Similar to what I said about Australia, it’s like how CoD is meant to be 18+ yet somehow still full of prepubescent squeakers who all apparently fucked your mother last night and have Dads who work for Xbox.

It would be far better to engage parents/schools in educating kids on how to more responsibly use social media and to critically analyse information - or alternatively force social media companies to implement better safeguards for kids who do end up on there, rather than play an endless and desperate cat and mouse race against them.

  • Well you see, this post is about the ways in a nuanced explanation is inferior to using the phrase “Dumb Fuck!” because it has to be specifically written for a post, can lead to an exhausting back and forth debate where you end up having to write more explanations, can often sound condescending due to the inability of text to carry the subtleties of spoken language, and the length of them can often be too boring to read. Of course simply writing “Dumb Fuck!” has none of these downsides, because it can be copied and pasted into almost any situation, is very hard to debate against, is very cathartic, and loses no subtlety in text versus spoken language.

  • Considering even MySpace and Digg stuck around despite falling into irrelevancy, I doubt Reddit will ever truly die off…

But I suspect that even irrelevancy won’t happen anytime soon, simply because there’s no slot-in replacement for Reddit.

As much as I like the Fediverse, we’re not a slot-in replacement. Decentralisation helps make us more free, but it limits how big we can get as a platform.

You would need a centralised competitor, something like what Xitter is going through right now with BlueSky and Threads. But for as much as Spez is a piece of shit, he’s no Elon Musk just yet.
