Rather than actually include their soundtracks on popular platforms, Nintendo graciously offers their own mobile app locked behind the Switch online subscription…

I’ve tried it and have a few thoughts:

Initial selection is only 23 games, not sure why they’re not just releasing everything. I guess they’re planning on parceling the music out like their emulators.

The choices of games are also kind of strange, like why 2 versions of Metroid? Why starfox 64 and not like Mario 64

The ability to extend songs up to 60 minutes is pretty cool

The idea of character specific playlists is interesting

It crashes semi frequently, not a good sign.

It does add value to the Switch online membership, but not much at this point.

This was something i noticed too. I probably won’t be using the app much because i already have all their music i want in my iTunes cloud library but the selection is odd and the choice too release the music selectively feels strange too me. I feel like they’d get more profit if they had most of their stuff on their from the get go

Initial selection is only 23 games, not sure why they’re not just releasing everything.

It’s to keep people returning to the app by artificially boosting the amount of updates.

Either that or licensing issues, but I just wanna have my conspiracy theory.

I think Nintendo already owns the rights to most (if not all) of the music for their games so I’m pretty sure your conspiracy theory is correct.

If they don’t own the rights to that music they’ve certainly been militant in taking down any other platform that makes it available.

Cool. So now I can expect Nintendo to start a DMCA takedown campaign of all their music on YouTube, and completely destroy the playlists I made.

No it won’t, they will dcma all Nintendo music everywhere. That means covers, jazz remakes, other style changes, and numerous other types of variants are going with it. Those types of things won’t be in their library and could go away completely. This is not a good thing

It’s a bit odd, but it only needs the basic subscription. It’s fair enough, I guess, gives a bit of extra value for the subscription. I can see why they wouldn’t want to give access to their entire music library for free.

Even if they had put it on Spotify they would’ve gotten royalties from there. Which would be a nice bonus for them, because I can’t imagine anyone paying Nintendo Online just for the music.

Well the entire music industry is using it, can’t be that bad.

And like I said, I imagine it would actually bring more money to the table than being a Nintendo Online exclusive.

Make sure to download any fan songs/mashups/remixes you like off of YouTube, because if Nintendo haven’t striked the fuck out of it already, they will now.

Of course they’re not doing it on Spotify, and instead choose to lock it behind their own subscription service.

Nintendo is such a greedy shitty corporation. I wouldn’t even be surprised if now they are gonna go after people that posted their music elsewhere.

This would’ve actually been a perfect to be included with the alarm clock they recently released.
