      Yep.

Which is why whoever approved it should be taken out back and, uh, terminated.

The idea that honoring insurrectionists who beat the shit out of cops, who desecrated the halls of democracy and broke an unbroken tradition of a peaceful transfer of power… in some how democratic is a slap in the face of every American. Even the fake-ass patriots.

They aren’t honouring them. It’s literally a giant turd to make fun of them. That’s the whole joke.

I don’t know, I reread it and that quote on the plate sounds pretty sarcastic to me. “To loot, urinate, and defecate through these hallowed halls to overturn an election” sounds more like a dig than actual reverence to me.

It’s an action that is celebrated by the insurrectionists and those that support them.

I have a hard time believing the artist/people that placed it aren’t supporters. It’s an extremely misguided thing.

And as for whoever approved it? It’s the freaking national mall, some decorum is warranted. “It’s just a joke, bro” doesn’t really work here.

“Overturn an election” is a dead giveaway that they are against the insurrectionists. That’s not a phrase that supporters use.

The article quotes the permit application, which calls Pelosi’s desk symbolic of the integrity and democracy which the rioters desecrated.

          I did.

They got a permit, it was approved.

They posted a plaque honoring the people who broke in

There’s no indication of a bait and switch, as far as the “art” was concerned.

Whoever approved the permit and allowed that art to be installed needs to have their employment terminated. This is a severe fuck up, and no, “democracy” doesn’t need to tolerate such bullshit.

“When rioters broke in to destroy these ideals, this desk stands firm, so too must the principles of equality, justice, and freedom that it represents”

You’re in too deep to admit you’re wrong now, but rtfa. If this doesn’t come off as dripping with sarcasm from top to bottom, you need to come up for air.

It seems like you took the words on the plaque very literally. The intent was to mock the rioters and to mock Trump.

It’s political satire. Read the full plaque again. It is extremely well excuted.

I’m legitimately disappointed the duration for the permit appears to be so short.

Regarding the employment of the personnel who approved the permit, that’s uncalled for. I’d recommend reading and internalizing the First Amendment. They really have.

The first amendment doesn’t really enter into it. It’s been long settled that the relevant authorities can stipulate approved used for particular parcels of land- including when and where you can organize protests.

You can tell by the whole “they got permits” thing. Like if the first amendment said they could just do it… you really think the NPS would bother with trying?

Also, do you understand how much of a shitshow it would be, if they had to tolerate everyone’s art?

(Like seriously, do you think they’d permit an installation depicting trump raping lady liberty? Probably not. But that would be protected speech. Or even let’s make it non-personal. A cartoony-capitalist raping lady liberty.)

The Mall is a place of ceremonial and historic significance for this country, which, is part of the reason they control it so heavily. As well as, it’s home to several monuments that hold deep significance and solemnity. There is a certain amount of decorum that is appropriate- at least as far as temporary exhibits and such go.

Do you really think we should be tolerating any kind of satire? submit there’s better and more appropriate venues.

And again, I’m not entirely convinced it was satire. Far too often repugnant statements have been excused by “it’s a joke bro”, and “it’s satire” is about the same.

*From what I can tell online, there’s actually three (or more) groups, including the NPS and the Trust for the National Mall.

Yeah, I’m a Britbong and apparently we’re regarded for knowing satire when it stares us in the face.

And we’ve also had the simple truth that the Germans at one point were terribad at it but are now nailing it down, especially when you come to the above users calling it “satire”.

It’s a shit joke in very bad taste no matter where you’re from or whatever political spectrum you’re aligned to. Made me giggle to be honest, and especially so how you downvoted for not getting lel joke.

We must remember what they did, as it is an antidote to complacency.
