I’ve never seen a futurist community online that isn’t just an attention-span-bankrupt group of headline-whores and hype-addicts, desperately trying to escape reality by embracing futurist ideas and sensational new stories without critical thought.

People want excitement more than they want truth.

This is why Trump was elected again.

MAGAs are not some strange species of subhuman. They’re humans like us, genetically identical almost, same with nazis and Jim Jones cultists and everyone else who has ever done anything inexplicable. They have the same vulnerabilities and the same biases and the same reactions. If they’re dumber, then the stories their brains will tell them to explain their feelings will also be dumber, but your brain does the same thing every time you feel a thing.

We’re all going to have to confront this unpleasant fact about just how much free-will we actually have in the coming decade as more and more of reality becomes compromised in our daily scrolling rituals, as more bots and scammers and influencers become far more sophisticated and intelligent in their schemes.

I hope that after some period of hardship and confusion we all look at information in a different way, as the internet becomes consumed by the AI slop engine and nobody can prove what’s real anymore and anyone can manipulate anyone else’s image and voice perfectly and we all have to embrace new attitudes towards ourselves and our ego.

Everyone shares some level of accountability, and I know nobody wants to hear it and will stomp and huff and gnash their teeth at the notion, but it’s true. Some carry a much larger chunk of that responsibility than others, from of course the people who didn’t care and didn’t vote, and the people who cared and still didn’t vote, to just the people who rolled their eyes every time someone posted a “political” picture in /r/funny and had to start a 300+ comment deep thread about how stupid politics is, down to the small pieces held by everyone who did everything right but never valued their community, didn’t make a stand against people saying and doing things we didn’t agree with, and lets not forget everyone who never involved themselves in their local elections even enough to vote for the people who represent them, they allowed many to go unchallenged and those people went on to prop up a government run by and representing a minority ideology.

Best way to do that is to be somewhat muscular.

And even then, guys, really get your fucking expectations and entitlements and just like, take them and shove them all into a duffle bag, squeeze any fragile ego you might have laying around in there too, and just throw that thing down a well and forget about it.

Seriously, if you can just “let go” of all the things you wish you had involving dating and relationships, and just learn to enjoy life and enjoy being around people, you will be a thousand, million times happier than the dudes who spend all their time trying and even succeeding to get laid when they want it.

If what you’re doing is frustrating you and making you unhappy… change. That’s your greatest power, just change. Go somewhere else, change what you want, change who you are and be genuine about it. (When you stop caring, it also has the bonus effect of making you cool, and thus wildly attractive to people who get to know you.)

Or until the American people get bored with talking about it, like with everything else, then stop caring and just let whatever happen.

Watched that terrible dracula on a boat movie last night, every scene between two people was an exchange of a perfectly spoken diatribe or 5 minutes of expositional speeches. Back and forth. Forever.

I can’t understand why they don’t attempt to make movie dialogue sound like real people talking. It’s as bad as laugh-tracks in terms of breaking immersion and making it feel like you’re watching a bad stage play.

I’ve been following you around for weeks trying to find ONE place where you wouldn’t see the lies and slander I’ve been trying to spread about you specifically. Curses, one day I will manage to find a place to tell lies about you where you will never find it.

We can’t even get people to go outside and meet live humans for sex anymore, everyone has switched to online apps for dating. People order food and groceries because we learned from Covid we don’t need to actually interact with other people.

Does anyone actually expect us to mobilize and topple powerful financial institutions? We have the most comfortable society on Earth in the US. Despite how miserable everyone is, nobody wants to leave their soft chairs and giant computer monitors and immersive video games and discord chat channels where you can mute and block anyone you don’t like. The only thing that could possibly change our course at this point would be some transhumanist/singularity nonsense like artificial general intelligence being developed and wrecking the economy.

But that’s tech being developed and controlled by the wealthy elite, so my hopes faded long ago.

I don’t think that’s entirely accurate, young people are definitely not “more chill” if anything they’ve just had to grow up faster in a world that bombards everyone with every adult concern as soon as they can read or pick up a phone.

There are some good things, like the massive drop in teen pregnancy and general decline of violence all around. But there’s now an epidemic of loneliness and depression affecting people of all ages, starting early in life. People have largely retreated to personal safety of their own online lives, and the shift to online dating hasn’t been good to people. Social media and scrolling is killing everyone’s attention-spans and ability to compromise and socialize. Women still are in danger of assault. Men are still desperately lonely. Existing is still a massive challenge if you don’t fall into the gender or sexuality binary and conservatism is on the rise among many young men because of sexual frustration and emotional vulnerabilities to the narratives of grifters. Definitely NOT chill shit going on and we have the dawning of technology that will make it even harder for people to connect. AI that can reliably fool people is going to throw a massive wrench into our entire culture. It’s worth being concerned about but we also have to encourage each other and ourselves to actually do challenging things like going out and talking to live humans as much as possible.

I am an adult and I do this too, but not because sex bothers me, it’s because the vast majority of sex in mainstream media is incredibly stilted and embarrassing to watch. Cinema has had over a century to try to portray and capture actual relationships between people and still hasn’t even come close to accurately portraying attractive, affectionate chemistry between two people.

The fact that in mainstream programs and movies, the lead characters ALWAYS have to have this “enemies to lovers” dynamic makes me gag. It was funny once or twice, but that’s not remotely how real people have real intimate relationships, so why does Hollywood lean in SO HARD to the same trope of the sassy female proving she’s as tough as the rugged male anti-hero and they always have to have this weird battle-of-wills where they have separate goals and can’t show affection openly to each other.

It’s no longer interesting. I have seen porn with better, loving, attractive relationships.

Because they have successfully lied and manipulated their current marketing material to make a sizeable portion of the population believe some kind of technological rapture is imminent, and that all we need is to invest, invest invest in AI tech. It’s a full-on cult now. The people they have roped in are fanatical, unpaid marketing mobs who don’t sleep, don’t waver, and can’t be reasoned with. They are the engine that is driving the hype train.

They had a legit, non-satirical post on reddit the other day making their plans for what they’re going to do when Artificial Superintelligence comes and changes the world and makes every human rich and immortal without the need to work. I am not even exaggerating, this is what they believe and there are probably millions of them.

Currently over 80% of AI startups fail, and the remaining ones are often bought up by larger companies trying to control intellectual property and future patents. And we have ZERO useful models in our hands. I still don’t use my copilot app for anything other than setting a 30-minute timer for my lunch break. I tried to activate an AI helper on Adobe to see if it could help my productivity. The thing can’t read graphs and charts and has zero contextual awareness and can’t do math. WTF GOOD IS IT?

In my time managing a team of about a dozen WFH employees, I had 10 of the 12 overworking every damn week. They were putting in time off-the-clock just because they were sitting at their desk without anyone coming in to shut off the lights and because they were comfortable at home. In the four years or so that I did that job, I had more problems with people overworking themselves than slacking off.

There were a couple times employees were obviously doing the bare minimum and playing video games. Since I managed in-person teams as well in the past, I know that this is normal, there will always be some percentage of employees that cannot stand working and try to do anything to avoid it. This happens WFH as well as in offices, but when it’s WFH the company managers and owners don’t have visibility on it, and thus feel not in control, and that’s the very worst feeling for most of these folks who run companies.
