I don’t think anyone really knows. It’s the single person issue, that Ernest was the only person to have access to do anything. It seems something is personally wrong for him, maybe unwell, maybe something else, but no one hears from him for months. The flagship kbin instance run by Ernest, https://kbin.social/, has had an error and hasn’t worked for months.

To my knowledge, this is the last anyone has heard from him:

I have been away from home for a long time now and do not have all accesses. I will try to restore access in the coming days. The care of the instance will also be handed over.

That was 5 months ago.

It’s clear something is very wrong, but because Ernest is the only one with access that means no one can help. Mbin forked Kbin and have been actively developing Mbin. Many, if not most of the sites called “kbin” are now running Mbin.

I’m not sure how far along they are, I don’t think I’ve seen a sublinks instance in the wild. Their demo seems to be running the Lemmy frontend still, if I’m understanding things right. But it’s basically a community project to build lemmy but in java instead of rust and they have a lot more moderation tools. It’s what Beehaw are planning to migrate to, but I think it might not be ready yet.

Kbin is dead, Mbin is good but different to Lemmy. Also see PieFed and Sublinks.

The wonderful thing about federated services is that you can have fun with all the users on Lemmy and see all the content but not have to actually use the Lemmy software. You can even follow Lemmy communities from Mastodon and interact with posts from there (just in a Mastodon way).

Pretty sure that’s a plus subscription for if you want to support them. It gives you hourly map updates and weather and other stuff hardly anyone needs. But you can use the app fine without it.

I still prefer Organic Maps though.

If you have an original Framework (from memory, 11th gen intel 13 inch), there were hardware issues that I don’t thing could be resolved via software updates. I believe they worked in them for the intel 12th gen and later.

I run a fedora derivative on an original framework, and I used a command to disable sleep and go to a deeper state (hibernate maybe?) so it doesn’t lose battery while asleep. And if you take out your HDMI, display port, etc cards and just use USB (or none) that resolves another power drain issue.

But basically, it’s usable but not perfect. I’m waiting to see if there’s another gen of AMD card coming then might update my mainboard.

I dunno, I like it as a laptop but I’m also seldom far from a charger.

I like to have a 50GB+ swap file. Though Fedora is a bit weird with swap files as by default it’s stored in RAM (Yes, extra space for RAM is stored in RAM. I… admit I don’t understand the detail).

I use a shit load of RAM on Linux. You guys clearly have amateur numbers when it comes to how many applications you have open at once.

It seems the RSA-155 (512 bit) encryption commonly used in the 90s was broken in 1999, no quantum needed (due to it being based on primes).

Though from what I can search up, reddit users from 10 years ago were confident a 128 bit modern algorithm (e.g. AES) would never be able to be brute forced, even by quantum computers.

I dunno, sometimes I wonder if not everyone on the internet is an expert.

But isn’t the point that we just need to stay ahead of it. Surely encryption used in the 90s could be broken by a quantum computer today?

Three months ago Intel stock dropped 30% overnight… so if Apple are even thinking about it then now is a good time.

I get how it’s possible, but this is Google. Surely they have decades of experience at keeping a website up no matter what happens!

But how does this happen? Surely Google has the ability to make highly available systems that are resistant to power going out at one of the three locations (as per the article).

It said it was free to download and use but a convenience charge for getting it on Steam.

But like you, I’m also happy with Heroic, and there’s also Lutris.

I normally play games on quite a lag. I don’t have much free time, and there are lots of good games. I basically never buy games that aren’t 75% off or more.

But when I saw Baldur’s Gate 3 was on GOG, I bought it straight away, as it had great reviews, it’s full price seemed very reasonable, and if AAA publishers are putting recent games on GOG I want to support that.

I’ve heard some people take the approach of “merge everything”. Whatever people contribute, merge it. People like to feel like their time is valuable, and that their work is valued.

You can follow up the merge with polish or tweaks but if you merge contributions you’re more likely to see more.

I think performant is probably the key thing here. There were ad blockers before and there are alternative ones now, but the thing that sets unlock Origin apart is how light weight it is.
