Obviously it’s Vang Vieng
A few years ago a brewery in Brazil sold beers contaminated with methanol, it was a problem that occurred in the production process. Several people died and others were left with serious sequelae for the rest of their lives.

I want everyone to understand that you can not have methanol type poisoning from the regular beer brewing process. Too many people think home brewing is harder or can lead to poisoning… it just doesn’t happen.
This is only possible in commercial brewing where the tanks have temperature jackets.
And even in commercial brewing you’re required to use safe substances in the jackets, in case there is some type of hole. In the US I think the only thing approved is propylene glycol which is non-toxic (but expensive in large quantities).
How this even happened is beyond me… but that’s why they require food safe, just in case.
Two Australians are in the hospital. Nobody’s talking about the two Danish girls who died, or how the UK foreign office is involved in helping their citizens in the area as well.
This may be bigger, and targeted, than it may seem initially. Because all of the 4 poisoned persons I’ve heard about, were drinking at the same hostel as a bunch of other kids, who didn’t get poisoned.
From the linked article:
It is understood at least two Danish women in their 20s have died, and at least 10 have fallen ill after drinking the tainted alcohol.
A statement from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs can confirm that two Danish citizens have passed away in Laos. For reasons of confidentiality in personal matters the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no further comments.”
‘Nobody’ says anything about anything if you don’t bother to read anything they have to say.
The Australian press is talking about the Australians. I’m sure the Dutch press is talking about the Dutch, and so on.
Why do these privileged kids go to the deadliest places on earth just for adventure? It’s kind of offensive tbh
Edit:
Laos is a source, and to a lesser extent, a transit and destination country for human trafficking. As a criminal activity, trafficking in person is difficult to evaluate and statistics documenting the scale of this subject in Laos are poor. International surveys estimate that between 200,000 and 450,000 people are trafficked annually within the Greater Mekong Subregion.
McKenzie let’s go on an adventure in one of the most dangerous places on earth! People are dying of poverty but just step over them and see how pretty that sunset.
I know you Lemmy kids don’t like to hear it, but us people raised in the third world think you’re idiots running around backpacking through dangerous places with Dad’s money
Offensive because you are too poor and it makes you feel bad by comparison?
I can sense your seething hate for poor people through your comment. Keep your bigotry to yourself. My comment referred to them backpacking through one of the deadliest places on earth and calling it an “adventure”. I wonder how fun the adventure is for the people in Laos who deal with human trafficking daily

You rich kids go to bad places, step over poor and dying people and ignore the suffering while you go “wow what an adventure!”
Your claim it is one of the most dangerous parts of the world simply doesn’t hold up. Laos doesn’t contain any of the top 100 most dangerous cities.
Laos is mostly considered to have a normal level of danger, except areas bordering Myanmar due to civil war, and Xaisomboun province due to civil unrest, as advised by multiple countries:

Secondly I don’t hate poor people, I was pointing out your hate of people with the means to enjoy their lives.
Young people travelling and experiencing new cultures is a good thing. What else would a person call that but an adventure?
Also it wasn’t the victims that used that word it was the media. You decided you hated the victims before you knew anything about them.
step over poor and dying people and ignore the suffering while you go “wow what an adventure!”
Yea the poor would really appreciate if you kept your income and wealth entirely in your own nation thanks. Tourism has never been important to an economy.
You are a short sighted and angry fool. Too focused on your own situation to view the world through any other lense.
I just witnessed a murder lol
Calling Laos the deadliest place on earth is kind of offensive.
Well I’m sure literally everything is offensive to you. I know the type
Didn’t you literally say you were offended by some people you don’t know choosing to go to Laos…?
Deadliest? What junk media have you been consuming?
Did you seriously ask that about Laos?? Are you that ignorant?

Or do you think pointing out a dangerous place isn’t PC? I’m from El Salvador and a few years back I would have told you to stay away from that gang filled, dangerous shit hole. Are you gonna defend me from my own comment about my own people?
You appear to have confused crime with homicide. You called them DEADLY, not high crime. Their homicide rate per 100k pop is about 8, barely above the US. For comparison, Jamaica is rated as the world’s highest homicide rate at 53 per 100k, and all the top 10 are above 25 per 100k. Laos is barely above average.

Maybe cure your own ignorance before projecting it onto others?
PS: Do you think you’re the only person on lemmy raised in the 3rd world?
Carrots have been recalled in the US because they killed a guy, that’s on top of gun shot being the #1 cause of death for American children. I think Laos is pretty safe by comparison.

Sounds like a very safe place for two pretty white teens traveling alone. /S
In the United States, there are more than 1 million people living in conditions of modern slavery, according to a recent study[1]. Annually, it is estimated that between 15,000 to 50,000 women and children are forced into sexual slavery[2]. The National Human Trafficking Hotline reported 10,359 cases involving 16,554 individual victims in 2021[4].

It’s because they think they’re better than everyone else. RFK Jr is a perfect example. You should check out the Behind the Bastards episode 2 about him. It’s full of crazy privileged kid nonsense.
Edit. Lol people downvoting in ignorance. Classic.

Firstly, bitching about downvotes is tacky. So tacky that even on reddit it was frowned upon.
Secondly, in ignorance? Well it’s either that or because you seem to believe that every 20yo that can afford to travel is a privileged douce. Take your pick, it really doesn’t matter to anyone else what you believe.
