Maybe I’m too entrenched in my ways. But I’ll take no game over having to deal with additional launchers or whatever else is required to game without using Steam.
GoG, Epic, Ubisoft, EA… Not interested.
GoG’s launcher can launch games from other launchers and it’s really not a big deal to have multiple. It’s not ideal to need a launcher but it’s a snappy launcher and not at all the same terrible experience as Ubi and EA’s that have the most obtrusive and sluggish setups.
It’s not ideal to need a launcher
So… I guess GoG is ideal then, because you don’t need a launcher for GoG games. You download the installers and boot up the game directly. I often get Steam to launch them instead, for the controller support. The GoG launcher is strictly optional.
I use Heroic to handle Gog, Epic and Prime games. It even has an 'add to Steam’s feature, if you really want to have everything in the same launcher.
You don’t need to use GOG’s launcher, they provide offline installer downloads.
Have a Lemmy gold: 🥇 !
This, to my mind, is the one biggest benefit of GoG. No separate launcher/front-end/DRM needed.
On the topic of launchers though, I’m a big fan of Heroic Launcher (for Linux at least). Can hook it into GoG, Epic, and Amazon.
Ok, then don’t use Galaxy. Just download the offline installer. Then add it as a non-Steam game to your Steam library. And make it look nice by downloading library images from steamgriddb and setting those up in Steam for it.
I do like steam because of the steam deck and proton but i have started using gog where i can for DRM free games. It works great with heroic game launcher as you can choose to use wine or proton
I remember reading the insert for this back in the day included in my Civilization box or something. Was interested in getting it, but I think I picked up Betrayal at Krondor or Ultima Underworld instead.
I guess now it’s time to revisit it.
