Summary

Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are preparing to crack down on pro-Palestinian protesters.

Measures could include deporting foreign students advocating for Hamas, prosecuting protest leaders for failing to register as foreign agents, and applying anti-terrorism or hate speech laws.

Critics, including civil rights groups like the ACLU and CCR, warn this could criminalize protected speech.

Legal battles are expected, especially as groups like the Heritage Foundation push initiatives like Project Esther to target alleged Hamas supporters.

Campus protests and student visa revocations are likely focal points for enforcement.

the party that acts as a partial if somewhat ineffective check on right wing Israeli policy

Okay I get you’re mad about the election results but Biden was not acting as a check on anything.

Weird phrasing, unless maybe you’re happy about the election results.

Democrats sanctioned far right Israeli leaders, limiting their ability to cause havoc in the West Bank. They also brought in literal tons of direct aid to Gaza, where armed groups have made it notoriously difficult to bring in and distribute aid.

I’m… Not? I just don’t try to kid myself about the Democrats being anything other than enthusiastic participants in Netanyahu’s genocide. Which the GOP also are you don’t need to tell me that.

Sanctioning individual has no effect on literally anything.

They also brought in literal tons of direct aid to Gaza, where armed groups have made it notoriously difficult to bring in and distribute aid.

Okay how does that contradict what I said?

That statement is truly incredible! Biden helped give cover to Netanyahu (in addition to endless supplies of bombs) and drew one tiny red line for a few weeks (no bunker-busters in Rafah) and that faded quickly. He stopped funding UNWRA, even when other Western countries resumed it. Continuous support for Israel in the UN Security Council.

The West Bank example is grotesque. What effect did those sanctions have? None that I can see. The IDF has begun destroying infrastructure like they have done in Gaza, in addition to all of the killings.

So no, there is no reason to defend Biden/Harris. Is Trump worse? Yes, so what about it? Should we refrain from protesting because Democrats are in power right now?

Sanctions didn’t do shit while Biden continued sending unlimited weapons and money. Sanctions are performative.

They won’t be concerned about those crackdowns until a Republican is doing it.
