Summary
Donald Trump has nominated former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as U.S. ambassador to NATO, a role critical to transatlantic security.
Whitaker, praised by Trump as a “strong warrior,” lacks foreign policy experience but is a loyal ally and critic of federal cases against Trump.
The appointment is unconventional, given Whitaker’s background in law enforcement.
NATO allies remain sensitive to Trump’s past skepticism of the alliance and his criticism of defense spending.
I think leaving NATO is one of those “we can leave whenever we want, but it’s going to be more work than it’s worth,” kind of situations. We use a lot of foreign soil to project our might and as much as Trump has said he would pull out of NATO I don’t see the guys that make billions making new and exciting ways to kill people being super happy about all that. Plus, he has bigly plans to deport everyone. So I am hoping NATO takes a back seat to that and those chuckleheads pull enough rope that when they do walk off the cliff it hangs them before they get to NATO.
Edit: a boy can dream lol
